The interview takes place at home, with a filmmaker guiding the conversation and recording picture and sound. Your parent does not need to write a speech or memorize a timeline. We ask follow-up questions, give room for their own wording and build the finished documentary around their account. Choose one family contact to gather the initial questions and photographs. A brief list of names, approximate dates and subjects to avoid is more useful than a fully written biography. Tell us who will be interviewed and whether another relative would like to contribute. The number of participants, locations and materials is agreed with your film package.
For the filming space, consider a comfortable seat and a room where conversation can be heard clearly. Let us know about stairs, access needs, pets or usual interruptions while we plan. You can also identify a few personal objects you would like discussed on camera. We will review the setting and schedule with you; your home does not need to be redecorated for the interview.

Start with the move: who made the decision, what the first home was like and which relatives or neighbors helped the family settle. For someone who grew up elsewhere, the years before Grayslake deserve space too. An address, a moving-day photograph or a letter can help make the sequence clearer.
The Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum documents the community’s growth through historical images and artifacts. That same question can guide a personal interview: what did your parent remember about a familiar street, school or workplace? Start with your own family photographs and their recollections, then identify any historical details you would like to check.
An unlabeled album often contains people younger relatives have never met. Ask your parent to describe the aunt who hosted holidays, the friend who became part of the family or the grandparent who taught them a skill. Record how they were related and a specific memory that helps explain the relationship.

Yes. Family photographs can provide useful starting points for the conversation. Select the images you most want explained and note any names or dates you already know. Digital photo integration is included within each package’s allowance. Scanning printed photographs is a separate option, and albums or fragile originals need an individual assessment and quote.
No. The film can start with what your parent remembers and the family materials you already have. It helps to note uncertain dates or spellings so they can be checked during preparation. A life-story interview records a personal account; extensive genealogy research or access to outside archives is not an automatic package inclusion.
The Story Portrait is $3,800 for a 15–20 minute film about one person. The Signature Life Film is $7,500 for a 30–40 minute film, and the Family Documentary is $12,500 for a 45–60 minute film. Grayslake travel is included as part of Lake County coverage. Review the package allowances and any optional additions before booking.
Your project is delivered privately. Interviews, photographs, home movies and related project materials are not used in a public portfolio, social media, advertising, public screening or festival without separate written permission. How your family’s materials are handled is also covered by the signed service agreement.
